Wreaths Across America dates back to 1992.  Very simply, it is a solemn process of placing a wreath on every US Veteran's grave at every US Veterans' Cemetery.
Bakersfield National Cemetery, the newest in the country, was among those adorned by wreaths on December 12, 2009.  The complete organization and fulfillment of this project is being carried out by the Bakersfield Breakfast Rotary Club.  Words cannot express the honor and humility that this project brings to all who participate.  Among the finest examples of the impact that this experience has had on our lives is in the form of a letter that we received from Oakley Shedd, one of the drivers delivering the wreaths.  Oakley and his partner, Steve Smith, went up and beyond any imaginable call to help us make this first wreath laying a success.

"Hello from Maine. Steve and I arrived back home at 1 am on Thursday the 17th. We had great traveling weather and a problem free trip. I'm in the process of writing a short report to Ryder logistics detailing our trip and offering all the appreciation that was given to us by all the persons we were delivering to. Of coarse the delivery in Bakersfield will be the largest part of my letter. :) This truly was an honor to have been chosen to participate in Wreaths across America and the trip will be remembered by us for our lifetimes. With all that happens in the world and all of the focus in the "news" about the bad things, the thoughts from this trip that will be with me are that in America it is possible to go across this land and meet wonderful, kind, patriotic, friendly people that care about their neighbors and honor their country and its veterans. Thank you for the warm welcome and hospitality that you gave Steve and I. Warmest regards to you all and Merry Christmas. Oakley Shedd"
